THE COMMUNITY CLOSET

The Community Closet is a free clothing resource for individuals and families in need. Southside@Main sought a visual identity that reflected their welcoming values, the historic character of their building, and the practicality of their services.

OVERVIEW

In March 2024, I had the opportunity to help create the relaunch of The Community Closet, a non-profit community resource store connected to Southside@Main, a church in Milton, Ontario. This pro-bono project provided students with the opportunity to give back to the community through a quick one-week logo creation contest. We competed with one another in teams of two to create a logo system that would be selected for use in by the church.

This project was completed in collaboration with Abby Lavell, and our logo was selected as the winning entry.

AUDIENCE

Milton’s population is young (average age ~35), family-oriented (average household size 3.3), and increasingly affected by affordability issues, where essentials like rent and food often take priority over clothing. Many families simply can’t afford seasonal or size-appropriate clothing, especially for children who are constantly growing. That’s where The Community Closet steps in, offering not just clothing, but dignity, relief, and community support.

SOLUTION

Our final design marries the iconic archways from the Southside@Main building with a stylized hanger to encapsulate the whole of who, where, and what the Community Closet has to offer to the community. Timeless, familiar, and structured iconography and typography help to reaffirm their friendly and sophisticated service, allowing people from all walks of life to feel welcomed and empowered through the service. We believe that the layered symbolism was the catalyst to meeting and exceeding client expectations.

CONCLUSION

The Community Closet project was a huge success for my partner Abby Lavell and I, as Southside@Main, the company organizing the rebranding opportunity, took on our logo as their new identity. Abby and I could not be any more proud of ourselves for giving back to our local communities and helping others achieve their vision!
